A car city that runs well past Eight Mile

Detroit built the American car industry, and it still moves by car. The city covers 139 square miles of land with about 649,000 people, and the work runs well past its edges: Dearborn, home to Ford's world headquarters, starts a few miles west of downtown, Warren lies across Eight Mile in Macomb County, and Southfield, Royal Oak and Troy fill the Oakland County suburbs to the north. Food orders cluster downtown, where the Lions play at Ford Field and the Red Wings and Pistons at Little Caesars Arena, and in Midtown, where Wayne State has about 24,000 students.

Corktown has its own pull since Ford reopened Michigan Central Station in June 2024 after more than $900 million of work, and Eastern Market draws around 45,000 shoppers on a Saturday. Then there is the winter. Detroit averages about 45 inches of snow a season, measurable snow usually falls between mid-November and early April, and January averages about 26 degrees. Snow slows every delivery, and since you are paid per job and not by the hour, a snowy evening means fewer jobs. A car that will not start on the coldest morning is a lost shift.

No pay floor, parcel work in Romulus and three ways to Canada

Michigan sets no earnings floor for app-based delivery, and a 2015 law stops any city from setting a minimum wage above the state rate. The Michigan minimum wage has been $13.73 an hour since January 1, 2026 and is scheduled to reach $15.00 on January 1, 2027, but it covers employees, not 1099 work. On the apps, then, a Detroit shift earns gross revenue: the offers you accept plus tips, before gas, a no-fault policy and winter wear on the car, with no floor under a slow night.

Romulus, 18 miles southwest of downtown, is a logistics town: Amazon opened its DTW1 fulfillment center there in 2018. And Detroit is a border city. The Gordie Howe International Bridge opened to traffic on July 27, 2026, linking I-75 with Highway 401 in Ontario, alongside the Ambassador Bridge and the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel. All three are tolled, and all three end at a customs booth.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about driving in Detroit

Does Detroit or Michigan guarantee delivery drivers a minimum?

No. Michigan has no earnings floor for app-based delivery work, and a 2015 state law stops cities from setting a minimum wage above the state rate. So nothing sits underneath app work in Detroit: what you earn is whatever the companies pay, plus tips.

Does the Michigan minimum wage apply to me as a driver in Detroit?

Only if you are employed. The Michigan minimum wage rose from $12.48 to $13.73 an hour on January 1, 2026, under the law the legislature passed in February 2025, and it is scheduled to reach $15.00 on January 1, 2027, then rise with inflation each year after that. It covers employees, and app-based delivery is independent contractor work, so it does not reach a quiet shift on the apps. Detroit cannot set a higher rate of its own: state law has barred local minimum wages since 2015.

How much can I earn delivering in Detroit?

Nobody publishes a Detroit rate, so start from the national figures the companies print. Amazon Flex, which lists Detroit among its locations, quotes up to $18 to $25 an hour for its blocks with tips counted in. Instacart pays $7 to $10 for a full-service batch before tips. DoorDash prices each offer on the time, distance and demand it involves and passes on every tip. Count all of it as gross revenue: gas, the no-fault policy and wear come out of it, and a week of snow cuts the number of jobs you finish. At tax time the IRS standard mileage rate is 76 cents a mile from July 1, 2026, and 72.5 cents for January to June.

How do I plan for winter driving in Detroit?

As part of the job. Detroit averages about 45 inches of snow a season at the airport, measurable snow usually falls between mid-November and early April, and January averages about 26 degrees. Keep a scraper, a brush and washer fluid rated for the cold in the car, check your tires before November, and leave more time for every delivery: you are paid per job, so a slow snowy evening means fewer jobs, not more pay.
