Delivery work across Leeds and West Yorkshire

Leeds counted about 812,000 people at the 2021 census, and the five districts of West Yorkshire (Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield, Kirklees and Calderdale) add up to roughly 2.35 million. The centre sits in a shallow bowl on the River Aire. The station marks its southern edge, Briggate and the Victoria Quarter run through the middle, and Call Lane, Kirkgate Market and Trinity Leeds pack the restaurants close together, so evening orders come out of a few compact streets. North of the Headrow the ground rises fast towards the University of Leeds, and beyond it Woodhouse, Hyde Park and Headingley hold the bulk of a student population well above 60,000 once Leeds Beckett, Leeds Trinity and Leeds Arts University are counted in.

Leeds is also routinely described as the largest city in western Europe with no tram or metro. A West Yorkshire mass transit line linking it to Bradford is planned, but it will not carry anyone for years, so the city still moves by bus and by car, and that keeps a lot of people ordering in rather than heading out. It has also shaped the centre: Vicar Lane, City Square, Park Row and the Headrow carry camera-enforced bus gates, and the one-way inner ring road known locally as the Loop sends cars the long way round. On a bike or a scooter those restrictions matter far less, which is a large part of why two wheels win in central Leeds.

What it takes to deliver in Leeds and the towns around it

Leeds drew up a charging Clean Air Zone and then shelved it in 2020, before a single charge was taken, because buses and lorries had switched to cleaner engines faster than the council expected. So driving an older car or van into Leeds costs nothing extra today. Bradford, ten miles west, went the other way. Its Class C zone has charged since September 2022 inside the Outer Ring Road and out along the Aire Valley to Shipley and Saltaire. Private cars and motorbikes are never charged there, but a van that falls short of Euro 6 diesel or Euro 4 petrol pays £9 a day, and a non-compliant taxi or private hire car pays £7. Anyone covering both cities in an older van should run the government vehicle checker first.

The other half of the work here is freight. The M62, the M1 and the A1(M) all meet in this corner of Yorkshire, which is why the east and south of Leeds are lined with distribution sheds at Cross Green and Stourton, and why Wakefield Europort at junction 31 of the M62 runs its own rail freight terminal for occupiers such as Royal Mail, Asda and DHL. Food comes through Uber Eats, Deliveroo, Just Eat and Stuart, from the centre of Leeds to the curry houses of Bradford and the student streets of Huddersfield, while DPD and Evri move parcels across all five districts. Sign up once and you can take a weekday parcel route out of the M62 estates, then switch to restaurant orders in Headingley on a Friday night.

Leeds specifics

Everything you need to know to drive in Leeds

Leeds has specific rules for couriers, riders and drivers that you should know before you start. From emission zones to licensing, here is what matters.

  • No Clean Air Zone charge in Leeds: the city shelved its zone in 2020, before any charge began
  • Bradford charges vans below Euro 6 diesel or Euro 4 petrol £9 a day inside its Outer Ring Road and out to Shipley and Saltaire; private cars pay nothing
  • Camera-enforced bus gates on Vicar Lane, City Square, Park Row and the Headrow keep cars and vans out of key centre streets
  • Private hire is licensed district by district: Leeds, Bradford, Kirklees, Calderdale and Wakefield each issue their own
  • Steep climbs from the centre to Headingley, and across Bradford and Halifax, make an e-bike worth more than a pedal bike
  • Every company asks for proof of your right to work in the UK

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about driving in Leeds

Is there a Clean Air Zone charge in Leeds?

No. Leeds City Council designed a charging zone and then shelved it in 2020, before it ever charged anyone, after a review with central government found that buses and lorries had moved to cleaner engines faster than planned. Private cars were never going to be charged under it anyway. An older car or van can work Leeds with no daily fee, though council policy can change, so look up where things stand before buying a vehicle for the work.

Will I pay the Bradford Clean Air Zone if I deliver there?

Only in some vehicles. Bradford's Class C zone covers the area inside the Outer Ring Road and runs out along the Aire Valley to Shipley and Saltaire. Private cars and motorbikes are not charged at all. A van that misses Euro 6 diesel or Euro 4 petrol pays £9 a day, and a non-compliant taxi or private hire car pays £7. You can pay up to six days after entering, and the government vehicle checker tells you in a minute whether your number plate is liable.

How do the Leeds bus gates affect delivery drivers?

They decide your route through the centre. Vicar Lane, City Square, Park Row, the Headrow and several other streets are bus gates watched by cameras, and a car or van that drives through one gets a penalty notice in the post. Drivers learn to approach the centre from the Loop and park on its edge. Couriers on bikes have it easier, since some of the gates let cycles through and the centre is small enough to cross on two wheels in a few minutes.

Which parts of West Yorkshire are busiest for food delivery?

Central Leeds and the student streets running north to Headingley come first, with late term-time evenings the strongest stretch of the week. Bradford is a second food market in its own right, with a curry trade that has won it the Curry Capital of Britain title more than once, and Huddersfield adds a university town of its own. Wakefield and Halifax are quieter for food but well placed for grocery and parcel work.

How much can I earn delivering in Leeds?

Expect around £13 an hour on a bike in a quiet spell, rising to about £20 in a van on a scheduled block. On Thursday to Saturday nights in the centre and Headingley, scooter couriers running more than one app can reach up to £30 an hour. All of it is self-employed revenue: fuel, insurance, vehicle wear and a tax reserve come out of it, and no minimum wage sits underneath a slow week.

Is there van and parcel work around Leeds?

Plenty. The M62, the M1 and the A1(M) all meet around Leeds, and the sheds at Cross Green and Stourton in the city, plus Wakefield Europort at junction 31 of the M62 with its rail freight terminal, keep scheduled routes running all year. Volume climbs through November and December. You need a car or a van for this work, and an older van is fine in Leeds but should be checked before any route that enters Bradford.
