Actual earnings depend on hours worked, area covered and how many companies you sign up with through Service Club.

Delivery work across Sheffield and South Yorkshire

Sheffield counted 556,500 residents at the 2021 census, and South Yorkshire as a whole, with Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley alongside it, holds around 1.4 million. The city grew along the valleys of the Don and the Sheaf, so the level ground follows the rivers and nearly everything else climbs, and that shape decides how a shift goes here. Kelham Island, a former steelworks district on the Don, now packs bars, breweries and new flats into a few streets north of the centre, while Division Street and West Street carry the late trade on the far side of it. To the west the suburbs rise towards the Peak District, which begins inside the city boundary.

Two large universities set the rhythm of the week. The University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam teach well over 50,000 students between them, and most of those students live in a band that runs from Broomhill and Crookes down through Ecclesall Road to Sharrow and Nether Edge, which makes that strip the busiest evening zone outside the centre during term. London Road, with one of the densest runs of takeaways in the city, keeps orders coming late. Football brings its own spikes: Sheffield Wednesday play at Hillsborough in the north west, Sheffield United at Bramall Lane just south of the centre, and the Utilita Arena sits out in the Don Valley near Meadowhall.

What it takes to deliver in Sheffield

Sheffield runs a charging Clean Air Zone, which sets it apart from Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool. Since 27 February 2023, cameras on every road into the inner ring road, and on the ring road itself, have charged non-compliant vans, taxis and private hire cars £10 a day, and lorries, buses and coaches £50 a day. A diesel van needs Euro 6 and a petrol one Euro 4 to drive in free. Private cars and motorbikes are never charged, so food orders in your own car or on a scooter cost nothing extra, but an older van on a city centre parcel route pays on every day it goes in. On two wheels the hills matter as much as the zone. Blake Street in Walkley is reckoned the steepest street in the city, and a pedal bike that feels fine along the river turns into hard work in Crookes, so an e-bike pays for itself quickly on the west side.

The parcel side of the region runs along the Lower Don Valley, where the old steelworks between Attercliffe and Tinsley have become warehouses and trade parks around Meadowhall and junctions 33 and 34 of the M1. Further out, iPort near Doncaster is a rail freight logistics park with room for 6 million square feet, with Lidl, CEVA and Fellowes among its tenants. Uber Eats, Deliveroo and Just Eat cover food across the city, and DPD, Evri, DHL and UPS cover parcels. A single Service Club signup puts you in front of several, which lets you take evening food orders around Kelham Island and scheduled parcel blocks out of the valley during the week. Private hire for Uber and similar operators needs a licence from your own council, because Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley each issue their own.

Sheffield specifics

Everything you need to know to drive in Sheffield

Sheffield has specific rules for couriers, riders and drivers that you should know before you start. From emission zones to licensing, here is what matters.

  • Sheffield's Clean Air Zone charges non-compliant vans, taxis and private hire cars £10 a day inside the inner ring road, ring road included
  • Vans go in free at Euro 6 diesel or Euro 4 petrol; private cars and motorbikes are never charged
  • The zone stops at the ring road: Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley have no charging zone
  • Steep western suburbs such as Walkley and Crookes make an e-bike far more practical than a pedal bike
  • Supertram rails run through the centre and catch narrow tyres, worst in the wet
  • Right to work in the UK required by all companies

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about driving in Sheffield

Do I need a car to deliver in Sheffield?

No. Uber Eats, Deliveroo and Just Eat take bikes, e-bikes and scooters, and the centre between Kelham Island, Division Street and the Moor sits close enough together for two wheels. Choose the two wheels with the hills in mind: an e-bike or a scooter copes with Broomhill and Crookes far better than a pedal bike. A car or van is needed for parcel, grocery and e-commerce work and for covering Rotherham, Barnsley or Doncaster.

Does Sheffield have a Clean Air Zone charge?

Yes, for some vehicles. Sheffield has run a class C Clean Air Zone since 27 February 2023, covering everything inside the inner ring road and the ring road itself. Non-compliant vans, light goods vehicles, taxis and private hire cars pay £10 a day, and lorries, buses and coaches pay £50 a day. Diesel vans meet the standard at Euro 6 and petrol ones at Euro 4. Private cars and motorbikes are not charged at all. Cameras read number plates around the clock, and a missed charge brings a £120 penalty notice, cut to £60 if it is paid within 14 days.

Is Sheffield too hilly for bike delivery?

Not with the right bike. The centre and the Don Valley are fairly level, but the west side climbs hard: Blake Street in Walkley is reckoned the steepest street in Sheffield, and Crookes, Broomhill and Nether Edge all sit well above the river. Couriers on pedal bikes tend to stick to the centre and Kelham Island, while an e-bike opens up the student streets, where much of the evening demand is.

How much can I earn delivering in Sheffield?

Expect from about £13 an hour on a bike when it is quiet, up to £19 an hour in a van on a full block. On Friday and Saturday nights and during term, scooter couriers stacking apps across the west side can reach £28 an hour. These are self-employed figures, which means you pay your own fuel, insurance, vehicle wear and tax from them, and a slow week has no wage floor beneath it.

Is there van and parcel work around Sheffield?

Yes. The Lower Don Valley between Attercliffe, Tinsley and Meadowhall is lined with warehouses and trade parks off junctions 33 and 34 of the M1, and iPort near Doncaster is a rail freight logistics park with room for 6 million square feet, with Lidl, CEVA and Fellowes among its tenants. Scheduled multi-drop blocks run through the week. If your van is older than Euro 6 diesel, check the Clean Air Zone before you take a route that goes inside the inner ring road.

Do I need a special licence to deliver in Sheffield?

Riding food orders on a bike, an e-bike or on foot needs no licence. Motorised delivery needs a valid UK driving licence and insurance that covers delivery use. Private hire work needs a licence from your own council: Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley each issue their own, and Rotherham requires CCTV in every licensed vehicle. A private hire car that misses the emission standard also pays the Clean Air Zone charge, even though an ordinary private car does not.
